The Wabanaki Alliance, a 501(c)(4) organization, is seeking an Executive Director. The Wabanaki Alliance’s mission is to advance and advocate for policy on the state and federal level, which will better the lives of all citizens of the Wabanaki Nations in Maine. The focus of the position will be providing staff leadership for the organization, working with the Wabanaki Alliance board, supervising employees and coordinating with consultants, fundraising, ensuring legal compliance, and maintaining and enhancing the many varied relationships and partnerships enjoyed by the Wabanaki Alliance.

Responsibilities


Leadership & Management:

    • Ensure ongoing programmatic excellence, rigorous program evaluation, and consistent quality of financial management and administration, fundraising, communications, and other organizational systems; recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve the strategic goals
    • Actively engage and energize Wabanaki Alliance supporters, volunteers, board members, partnering organizations, and funders
    • Develop, maintain, and support a strong board of directors; serve as ex-officio of each committee, seek and build board involvement with strategic direction for ongoing operations
    • Ensure effective systems to track scaling progress, and regularly evaluate program components, so as to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the board, funders, and other constituents

Fundraising & Communications:

    • Expand revenue generating and fundraising activities to support existing program operations. Implement year-round cultivation of donors including non-fundraising appeals
    • Deepen and refine all aspects of communications—from web presence to social media to external relations with the goal of expanding support for Wabanaki Alliance policy initiatives
    • Work with Board, Advisory Board and consultants to recruit candidates for local and state office
    • Help build the Wabanaki Alliance staff. Hire, train, supervise, support, & evaluate employees
    • Manage consultants and hold them accountable for outcomes for digital, communications and legislative goals

 

Qualifications

The Executive Director will be thoroughly committed to the Wabanaki Alliance’s mission. All candidates should have proven leadership, mentoring, and relationship management experience. Concrete demonstrable experience and other qualifications include:

      • Unwavering commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation
      • Excellence in organizational management with the ability to manage a largely volunteer-based organization, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget
      • Past success working with a board of directors with the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships
      • Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures
      • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills
      • Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to organizational planning
      • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people
      • Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed
      • Knowledge of Wabanaki Nations, experience working with Wabanaki Peoples, skill working with Indigenous Peoples
