More than 100 people attended the Wabanaki Alliance 2026 US Senate Forum April 16 at Indian Island School in Old Town. Hosted by the Penobscot Nation, the forum included Democratic candidates David Costello and Graham Platner.
The forum was moderated by Darren Ranco, PhD, a citizen of the Penobscot Nation and professor of anthropology and coordinator of Native American Research at the University of Maine, with opening comments by Penobscot Nation Chief Kirk Francis.
From youth-led inquiries on environmental justice to discussions on economic opportunities, engagement by candidates and attendees was inspiring, with dialogue focused on a path forward for Wabanaki Nations.
“This event along with the gubernatorial forum in March reinforces a great sense of hope for our future,” said Maulian Bryant, a citizen of the Penobscot Nation and executive director of the Wabanaki Alliance. “By bringing these critical issues to the forefront we are shaping a new era of tribal-state relations rooted in mutual respect and the recognition of our inherent rights.”
This is the second of three candidate forums organized by the Wabanaki Alliance this year. Eight gubernatorial candidates participated in a forum March 19 hosted by the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians (watch a recording here). A forum for candidates for US House second Congressional district will be May 13 in Presque Isle, hosted by the Mi’kmaq Nation. Find more information here.
The primary election for Democratic and Republican candidates is Tuesday, June 9. The general election is Tuesday, Nov. 3. Find more information about Maine elections on the Secretary of State website.
